Trainee Driving Instructor Licence Overview

After completing all the requirements and passing the ADI Part Two of the driving test, you are now eligible to apply for and be issued with a Trainee Driving Instructor Licence. The trainee licence, in general, allows driving instructors the option to;

  • Exercise giving instructions within the 6 months upon issuance
  • Be paid while giving instructions
  • Practise and develop instructional ability to prepare for the ADI Part Three

Requirements for Trainee Driving Instructor Licence

  • ADI Part One passer for at least 2 years
  • ADI Part Two passer
  • Have completed at least 40 hours of training under a qualified ADI training instructor
  • Is eligible to take the ADI Part Three test

Trainee Driving Instructor Licence Rules

You can choose from two options when you apply for a Trainee Driving Instructor Licence. You can either;

  • Supervised for at least 20% of all the lessons you conduct under your trainee licence – In this option,
    • You must be supervised by your sponsoring ADI for at least 20 % of the lessons you conduct.
    •  You must keep record of number of hours you give lessons as well as the number of lessons you conducted under supervision
    • The ADI 21S supervision record form must be signed by both you and your ADI. You must send it to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) when your trainee licence runs out.

  • Do at least 20 hours more of extra training under your trainee licence – In this option,
    • You must do extra 20 hours of extra training within the 3 months upon getting your Trainee Driving Instructor Licence.
    • 25% of the training must cover practical in-car training
    • Must be recorded on the ADI 21AT instructor training declaration form.
    • You must send the form to DVSA before the end of the 3 months, or give it to the examiner who carries out your ADI part 3 test – whichever is sooner.
